First Time Coming to Hodgkins, Illinois – Did You Know?

The Illinois and Michigan Canal’s construction and operation was the reason for the formation of many villages presently found along its banks. Hodgkins is one such village, and the I&M Canal is still in existence about one mile south of the city. In 1984, Congress named the canal and its adjacent land the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor. It stretches from Chicago to LaSalle-Peru and has numerous historical sites, nature preserves and wildlife. The Village of Hodgkins was incorporated in 1896.

Hodgkins has a 2010 population of 1,897, and is a village in Cook County, Illinois. CACH, a large United Parcel Service sorting facility, is partially located in Hodgkins and partly in nearby Willow Springs. It is the “largest package sorting center in the world” and employs over 9,000 people. [2] and is the “largest package sorting center in the world.”[3] The location of the CACH is typical of many major companies who require ease of transportation to locations across the United States. The village of Hodgkins’ water department purchases its Lake Michigan water from McCook, and it maintains its own police department and public works department.
PRIME LOCATION
Total area of Hodgkins is 2.64 square miles, with 2.58 square miles of land and 0.05 square miles of water. It is a little over 3 miles from Chicago’s western city limits, and had 2,134 people, 841 households and 470 families residing in the town in 2010. Hodgkins has an elected president and six trustees, with The Village President, Village Clerk, and three Trustees elected every four years. The village’s name is unrelated to Thomas Hodgkin, the discoverer of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It comes from a local landowner and businessman, Jefferson Hodgkins.
QUALITY OF LIFE
It is the village’s high, flat, and dry land availability and relation to expressways that makes it a great distribution and transfer point between Chicago and the rest of the nation, but by the late 1970s, the motor freight industry started to decline. Hodgkins teamed up with the village of McCook to create the McCook-Hodgkins Enterprise Zone in 1985, and in 1986 made the Tax Increment Finance (TIF) District within the Enterprise Zone. These served to offer incentives to new businesses who wanted to locate there, resulting in commercial business replacing motor freight as Hodgkins’ growth mechanism.
