First Time Coming to Kenosha, Wisconsin – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

The Kenosha area had prehistoric settlements dating approximately to the era of the Wisconsin glaciation. The early name by the Ojibwa Indians is Masu-kinoja, portraying the spawning trout as there were thousands of fish entering the rivers from Lake Michigan. Early white settlers were part of the Western Emigration Company, arriving in the early 1830s from Hannibal and Troy, New York. About a century later, between 1902 and 1988, Kenosha was producing millions of automobiles and trucks, and a prototype steam car was created in 1900 by the Sullivan-Becker engineering firm. It was the 1902 Rambler that was the first automobile to use a steering wheel instead of a tiller to control steering.

TODAY

Today the city is considered a “bedroom community” within the Chicago-Milwaukee megalopolis, and county statistics say that 49% of Kenosha’s workforce commutes outside of Kenosha County to their jobs, although the city has some of its own employment and is not a “typical” suburb. The Milken Institute reported that Kenosha placed in the national top-50 high-tech economies in 2009. The city’s employment demographics are mainly white-collar, and the largest employer is the multi-level educational system. Kenosha is home to Snap-on Tools world headquarters.

PRIME LOCATION

Kenosha has an eastern boundary of Lake Michigan, a northern border of the Town of Somers, a western border of the village of Bristol, and the village of Pleasant Prairie bordering on the south. Located almost halfway between Milwaukee and Chicago, Kenosha’s passenger train station is the last stop on Chicago’s Union Pacific North Metra Line. Between 1940 and 2000, Kenosha’s population grew by 117 percent. The state of Wisconsin passed a 1999 law that mandated each municipality to produce a comprehensive plan, but Kenosha had already been creating comprehensive plans since 1925.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Kenosha’s economy is increasingly impacted by tourism, and according to the Kenosha Convention and Visitors Bureau the 2006 tourism expenditures hit $222.5 million, translating into about 5,220 full-time-jobs. Kenosha’s $15 million Civil War Museum opened in June 2008 and it was a major tourism-related event. The city’s other attractions include the Dinosaur Discovery Museum, the Kenosha Public Museum, Mars Cheese Castle, the Longaberger Basket Fest, and a holiday-season Jelly Belly retail outlet. The city also has UAW memorabilia and an AMC Pacer at the Kenosha History Center. The inaugural Wisconsin Marathon occurred in 2009.
