First Time Coming to Oak Lawn, Illinois – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

It was in 1882 that a post office, train depot and surrounding community became known as Oak Lawn, and for the next two decades the population grew and more homes and business were built. After World War II, the city saw a boom as veterans returned home to take advantage of the G.I. Bill. The annual event called Oak Lawn Round-Up Days started in 1949 to help promote the Village, initially drawing 25,000 people. There were nearly 20,000 residents in Oak Lawn by 1960. One of the worst urban area tornados touched down in Oak Lawn in 1967, damaging or destroying around 900 buildings killing over 30 people.

TODAY

Oak Lawn is a village in Cook County, Illinois, with a 2010 population of 56,690 people. A southwest suburb of Chicago, Oak Lawn is known for its community hospital. Christ Community Hospital (now known as Advocate Christ Medical Center) was built in 1960 and today has a state-of-the-art Level 1 trauma center, with an emergency department that treats more patients than any other hospital in the state. The many churches of Oak Lawn include: Calvin Christian Reformed Church, First Christian Reformed Church of Oak Lawn, First United Methodist Church of Oak Lawn, Pilgrim Faith United Church of Christ, St. Catherine of Alexandria, St. Germaine, St. Linus, South Side Baptist Church, St. Louis de Montfort, The Family of St. Gerald, and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.

The village has a total area of 8.59 square miles, all land, and there were 22,846 housing units in 2000 at an average density of 2,657.9 per square mile. The population then was 55,245 people, with 22,220 households and 14,554 families living in Oak Lawn. Top ancestries reported in Oak Lawn were Irish (30.4%), German (19.5%), Polish (19.3%), Italian (9.7%) and English (4.4%). The town’s Deblin Lane pays tribute to its Polish American heritage, for Dęblin, Poland. A household’s average size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.14. The median household income in the village was $47,585.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Whether it be a small corner play lot or the 38-acre Centennial Park, Oak Lawn maintains an expansive park system. It has over 300 acres of parks, recreational facilities and open land, that includes playgrounds, walking paths, baseball fields, volleyball and tennis courts, basketball, plus outdoor swimming pools, an indoor ice arena, two fitness centers, and an 18-hole golf course. The 18-hole Stony Creek Golf Course was designed by Carl Getz, opening in 1982, and it even features a miniature golf course. At the prompting of the city President, in 2007 Oak Lawn began hanging messages attached to the city stop signs to encourage drivers to obey the signs. Local residents were encouraged to submit their own ideas, and the signs can be found throughout the village.
