Orland Park has been a center for growth for the past 20 years in Chicago’s southwest metropolitan region. The area has seen significant commercial growth and an outward spread of residential subdivisions, all to support automobile production. The community got its start a little to the east, in an area known as the English Settlement, with a village focused around a grade school and a Methodist church. Immigrants from the British Isles arrived from 1834 to 1848, and Luxembourgers and Germans came in the 1840s.

Orland Park is a village in Cook County, with a population of 56,767 in 2010. It is 25 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, with a trade area of over 850,000 people that goes all the way to the Indiana border. Money magazine awarded Orland Park the title of “45th Best Place to Live in America” in 2006. It offers hiking and biking trails, greenbelts, wildlife refuges, a Sportsplex and an aquatic center, in addition to having Lake Sedgewick, an ice arena, playing fields, golf courses and parks. Finance, retail, services and healthcare field jobs and businesses continue to grow in Orland Park, with a recent study showing that over one million people come to the city for health care services every year.

PRIME LOCATION

Orland Park is part of three congressional districts, the 1st, the 11th, and the 13th, the latter encompassing about half its population. The top employers, according to Orland Park’s 2012 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, are Consolidated High School District 230, Orland School District 135, and Jewel-Osco. In 2000 there were 18,675 households and 14,361 families living there, with a population density of 2,668.4 people per square mile. Top ancestries in Orland Park are Irish (26.5%), German (19.5%), Polish (18.5%), Italian (14.8%) and English (5.1%).

QUALITY OF LIFE

Orland Park has a huge Recreation and Parks Department with over 60 parks. The popular, 192-acre Centennial Park Aquatic Center has six water slides, two large pools, kid’s play area, and two outdoor sand volleyball courts. Just south of that is Lake Sedgewick, a 95-acre lake with hiking paths, nature trails, boardwalks, boat ramps, pedal boats and kayak rentals, fishing and boating. The Winter Wonderland Ice Rink is free of charge, and they have skate rentals. Notable residents are: John Cangelosi, outfielder for seven Major League Baseball teams; Pat Fitzgerald, head football coach for Northwestern University; and Buddy Guy, blues singer and guitarist.
