First Time Coming to Rockford, Illinois – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

On the west bank of the Rock River, Germanicus Kent, Thatcher Blake, and Lewis Lemon, of Galena established a community in 1834–1835, halfway between Chicago and Galena. It was at first called Midway, but the excellent ford across the Rock River soon had people calling it Rockford. Incorporated as a village in 1839, and chartered as a city in 1852, the city had three daily newspapers by 1890. In 1847 the Rockford Female Seminary was chartered, which later became co-educational. It went through some other name changes, but most currently is called Rockford University, as of 2013. Jane Addams (RFS Class of 1881), the founder of Chicago’s Hull House and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931, is its most notable graduate.

TODAY

Rockford is found on both banks of the Rock River in farthest north Illinois, and is often called “The Forest City”. In September of 2006, five inches of rain dumped onto Rockford causing destruction of twenty homes and damage of hundreds. Rockford was hit by 5–7 inches of rain less than a year later and many streets were flooded along with great fear of the Alpine Dam breaking.

During the months of March, April, May, and June Rockford and surrounding areas are prone to violent thunderstorms, with the neighboring town of Belvidere being struck by a violent F4 tornado in 1967 killing twenty-four people. The city is also often receives severe snowstorms in winter and frequent blizzards.

QUALITY OF LIFE

The Rockford area is a well-known outdoor destination, particularly in fall, spring and summer. Five miles southeast of the downtown area, the Kishwaukee River valley is surrounded by lots of forest preserves.
