First Time Coming to Skokie, Illinois – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

In a 1940 referendum, residents picked the Indian name “Skokie” over the other proposed name “Devonshire”. The Great Crash of 1929 and the following Great Depression put a stop to the large-scale development that had been happening during the real estate boom of the 1920s. The development, however, did return when parents of the baby boom generation moved their families out of Chicago in the 1940s and 1950s. Skokie has found itself as a focal point of cases before the United States Supreme Court two times in its history, the first involving a First Amendment issue, and the second regarding the Commerce Clause. In the late 1970s, the Illinois Nazis of the National Socialist Party of America – derived from the American Nazi Party – attempted a march in Skokie. Many Holocaust survivors live in Skokie, so the village’s government disputed permission.

TODAY

Skokie is a village in Cook County, Illinois, and its name comes from a Potawatomi word for “marsh”. Skokie was at first a German-Luxembourger farming community, but was eventually settled by a sizeable Jewish population, particularly after World War II, and it is home to the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center. Skokie was rated number 71 on America’s top 100 places to live in 2013 on the livability.com website.

PRIME LOCATION

The village has a total area of 10.06 square miles, and its street circulation is a standard street-grid pattern. The Skokie Park District manages 240 acres of parkland, public spaces, historical sites, and ten facilities. It recently won a national “Gold Medal for Excellence” in parks and recreation management. Skokie’s upscale shopping center, Westfield Old Orchard, is the third largest mall by total square footage in Illinois. In 1988, a sculpture garden between Dempster Street and Touhy Avenue was started and now has over 70 sculptures.

QUALITY OF LIFE

The Skokie Public Library was given the 2008 National Medal for Museum and Library Service from First Lady Laura Bush in a ceremony at the White House, noting the library’s cultural programming and multilingual services. The village’s economic health through careful fiscal management is reflected by their AAA bond rating. It became the first municipality in the country to achieve nationally-accredited police, fire, and public works departments, with a Class-1 fire department, according to the Insurance Services Office (ISO) ratings in 2003.
