First Time Coming to Arlington Heights, Illinois – Did You Know?

Arlington Heights is mainly in the western part of Wheeling Township, with land being sold here by the General Land Office in 1835. By the last part of the 1850s, the area became known for its truck farms that sent dairy products and vegetables to Chicago via the railroad that had a stop there. The depot town grew to a population of about 1,000 with the addition of a blacksmith, cheese factory, hardware store, and hotel, incorporating as Arlington Heights in 1887. Most residents were farmers, though some worked in Chicago, as the community was an early commuter suburb for the city.

Arlington Heights is a village in Cook County about 25 miles northwest of Chicago’s downtown. With a population of 75,101 in 2010, it is the most populous U.S. community incorporated as a “village”. The city is best known as being home to the Arlington Park Race Track that holds the Arlington Million, a Breeders’ Cup qualifying even. The village has one of the largest collections in the state in the Arlington Heights Memorial Library. The Village of Arlington Heights is active in business, residential and community development, and is served by many fine hotels. Top employers are Arlington Park and Northwest Community Hospital, with 4,500 and 4,000 employees respectively.

Arlington Heights’ two stations, Arlington Heights and Arlington Park, provide daily rail service between Harvard, Illinois, and Chicago on Metra’s Union Pacific/Northwest Line. If Metra’s proposed STAR line gets funded, it will probably include a third station on the south end of Arlington Heights. Interstate 90 and Illinois Route 53 run along the south and western edges of the city and provide routes to nearby O’Hare International Airport, the city of Chicago, and other suburbs. There were 76,031 people residing in the village in 2010, with 30,763 households and 20,518 families. There also is a Japanese community in Arlington Heights as of 2011.

The Metropolis Performing Arts Centre is the premiere entertainment venue in downtown Arlington Heights, with not only live entertainment, but arts education as well. The facility has a ballroom, classrooms for music and theatre, and a 350-seat theatre. New residential construction and commercial developments are heated topics in the local news currently. Residential noise, neighborhood style and character, drainage, and crowding of lots are some of the issues. Commercial issues are of noise, traffic, parking, retail and residential mix and financing.
