First Time Coming to Aurora, Illinois – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

After being officially incorporated as the city of Aurora in 1857, the city grew with many factories, jobs and people. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad located its roundhouse and locomotive shop in Aurora in 1856, and it was the town’s largest employer until the 1960s. Heavy industries located on the East side offered employment for the many European immigrants coming from Great Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia, Luxembourg, Germany, France, and Italy. Aurora became economic center of the Fox Valley region and the town showed progressive attitudes toward education, religion, welfare, and women. It had the first free public school district in Illinois, established in 1851, and a high school for girls in 1855.

TODAY

Aurora is the second most populous city in the State of Illinois, with a population of 199,932 in 2012. Previously a mid-sized manufacturing city, Aurora has grown enormously over 50 years, with the U.S. Census Bureau ranking Aurora as the 34th fastest growing city in the United States between 2000 and 2003. Aurora adopted the nickname “City of Lights” officially in 1908, due to it being one of the first cities in the country to install an all-electric street lighting system in 1881. The Aurora area has an impressive collection of architecture, some by the great Frank Lloyd Wright.

PRIME LOCATION

Aurora has a total area of 45.80 square miles that is politically divided into wards, and generally divided into three regions: the West Side, the East Side, and Fox Valley (or the Far East Side). The annual precipitation for Aurora is about 40 inches, but in 1996 a major flood struck with 16.9 inches of rain in a 24 hour period – an Illinois state record. Northern Illinois sees tornadoes annually, but Aurora has not been affected by any in recent history, though heavy snowfall and periodic blizzards are common. In 1909, one of Illinois’ strongest earthquakes ever hit Aurora that put cracks through chimneys.

QUALITY OF LIFE

The 1992 film, Wayne’s World, is a buddy film set in Aurora with characters that emerged from the television show Saturday Night Live. An original author of the skit hailed from neighboring Naperville, Illinois. Aurora had the right blue-collar feel they were looking for. Portions were actually filmed on location in Aurora, particularly the scene where White Castle is shown. The Fox TV show, Prison Break, has many references about Aurora because the show is filmed in the area. The 1986 film, Let’s Get Harry, used some basic shots of the New York Street Memorial Bridge as well.
