First Time Coming to Berwyn, Illinois – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

During the 1920s, Berwyn was the area’s fastest growing suburb with many blocks of well-built brick two-story bungalows, courtesy of the city’s stringent building codes. This now significant collection of Chicago-style bungalows includes elaborate design elements that were not common, like stained glass windows, clay tile roofs, terra cotta, and intricate brick patterns. To celebrate the heritage of Berwyn’s large CzechoSlovakian population, in 1968 they organized the Houby Day Parade which coincides with the fall mushroom harvest. Many Italian families moved there in the 1960s and 70s, and the Maria SS Lauretana Italian-Sicilian Religious Festival is still held there during Labor Day weekend.

TODAY

Berwyn is a city in Cook County, Illinois, with a total population of 56,657. It is a very diverse city with a growing arts community that has a professional equity theater, an Arts Council and high level music and entertainment venues. Many artists enjoy this vibrant and affordable alternative to Chicago. A sizable new YMCA opened in 1987 with an Olympic sized pool, racquet, handball court, exercise facilities and a gym, complete with a rehabilitation center run in partnership with the MacNeal Memorial Hospital. Two notable parks are Proksa Park and Baseball Alley.

PRIME LOCATION

The city has a total area of 3.90 square miles, all land. There were 56,657 people living in the city in 2010, with 18,910 households. Berwyn has the highest population density of any Illinois township. It and Cicero are the only two townships that have higher population density than Chicago. The median age is 32.9 years, and for every 100 females there are 98.1 males. Median annual household income in the city is $50,388, and $55,946 for a family. Male workers had a median income of $42,099 at full-time hours, versus $34,989 for females.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Berwyn’s 2010 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report shows the top employers in the city were MacNeal Hospital, J. Sterling Morton High School District 201, and the City of Berwyn. The sculpture Spindle, made by artist Dustin Shuler, located in the Cermak Plaza shopping center along with other works of art was a notable landmark for some time. It was demolished and scrapped in 2008, to make room for a new Walgreens. There were grassroots efforts to Save the Spindle that failed to raise the $300,000 needed to dismantle and relocate it. Joey Goodspeed, running back for the Minnesota Vikings, St. Louis Rams, and San Diego Chargers was born in Berwyn, as was golfer with the PGA Tour, Gary Hallberg.
