First Time Coming to Chicago, Illinois – Did You Know?
YESTERDAY
The name “Chicago” is a French pronunciation of a Native American word shikaakwa, meaning “wild onion” or “wild garlic”. The earliest reference to the name was from Robert de LaSalle, around 1679, where his memoir referenced the site of the current city of Chicago as “Checagou”. It was noted by Henri Joutel in his 1688 journal that wild garlic, called “chicagoua,” grew in the area abundantly. After the Northwest Indian War, a part of current day Chicago was released to the United States for a military post in 1795 by native tribes, per the Treaty of Greenville.
TODAY
With 2.7 million residents, Chicago is the third most populated city in the U.S., after New York City and Los Angeles. It is also the most populous city in Illinois and the entire American Midwest. The metropolitan area is sometimes called Chicagoland. Today the city of Chicago is an international hub for finance, commerce, telecommunications, industry and transportation, with its O’Hare International Airport ranking as the second-busiest airport in the world. The city is often called the “Windy City” or “Second City.”
PRIME LOCATION
The city is found on the southwestern shores of Lake Michigan in northeastern Illinois, resting on a continental divide at the Chicago Portage where the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes watersheds come together. Chicago is next to the enormous freshwater Lake Michigan, and it has two rivers running entirely or partially through it, the Chicago River in downtown and the Calumet River in the industrial South Side. The city’s economy and history are closely connected to its proximity to Lake Michigan. Interestingly, the lake also moderates the climate for waterfront neighborhoods, making it a little warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
QUALITY OF LIFE
Chicago’s streets are in a grid, based on the city’s original plat, with most of the residential streets having a wide patch of grass or trees between the street and the sidewalk. It has the longest continuous urban street in the world, Western Avenue. .[102] Other famous streets include North Michigan Avenue, North State Street, Clark, and Belmont Avenue. The city is known for its outdoor public art, with some by famous artists. Soe examples are: Chagall’s Four Seasons; the Chicago Picasso; Miro’s Chicago; Calder’s Flamingo; and Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate (now an icon of the city). Over a third of the population resides in waterfront neighborhoods.
