First Time Coming to Cicero, Illinois – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

Al Capone moved to Cicero to be out of reach of Chicago police after running his criminal empire in the city. The Cicero race riot in July of 1951 received worldwide condemnation when a mob of around 4,000 people attacked and burned the apartment building at 6139 W. 19th Street. It was the home of African-American Chicago Transit Authority bus driver, Harvey Clark Jr. and his family. They had recently relocated to the then-all-white city. Governor Adlai E. Stevenson had to call out the Illinois National Guard, the Clarks had to move away and the building was boarded up.

TODAY

Cicero is an incorporated factory town in Cook County, with a population of 83,891 at the 2010 census. Its named for the town of Cicero, New York, and the top non-Hispanic ancestries there were Polish (4.7%), Irish (3.7%), German (3.7%), Italian (3.0%) and Czech (2.3%). Around one quarter of the city presents one of the greatest industrial concentrations anywhere as of 1999, with over 150 factories in 1.75 miles. There were two racetracks on the south side of Cicero, the Hawthorne Race Course, and the Chicago Motor Speedway at Sportsman’s Park, that used to be Sportsman’s Park Racetrack for horse racing.

PRIME LOCATION

Cicero’s total area of 5.86 square miles is all land, no water. Much of its previous area was annexed by Chicago, and it used to run from Harlem Avenue to Western Avenue and Pershing Road to North Avenue. There are 22,101 households and 17,752 families residing in the town, with a population density of 14,315.9 people per square mile. As of 2010, there were 24,329 housing units at average density of 4,151.7 per square mile, with an average household size of 3.79 and average family size of 4.19.

QUALITY OF LIFE

St. Mary of Czestochowa is a Neo-Gothic church in the Polish Cathedral style with claim to fame as the site of Al Capone’s sister Mafalda’s wedding in 1930. It also holds famed sculptor Professor Czesław Dźwigaj’s sculpture of Christ the King. The monumental bronze doors of St. Hyacinth’s Basilica in Chicago are also by him. Also in Cicero is one of the original towers of the enormous Western Electric manufacturing plant, Hawthorne Works Tower, once standing east of Cicero Avenue. It is still located near the corner of Cermak Road, or 22nd Street, and Cicero Avenue, behind the Hawthorne Works Shopping Center.
