First Time Coming to Joliet, Illinois – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

Following the Black Hawk War, in 1833 Charles Reed built a cabin along the Des Plaines River. On the other side, James B. Campbell (treasurer of the canal commissioners) created the village of “Juliet” in 1834. The name was probably a corruption of the French Canadian explorer’s name, Louis Jolliet. The residents changed the name from “Juliet” to “Joliet” in 1845, and Joliet was reincorporated as a city in 1852.

TODAY

Joliet is found in Will and Kendall counties, located 40 miles southwest of Chicago. It is the fourth-most populated city in the state, with a population of 147,433, and it remains Illinois’ fastest growing city – one of the fastest in the southwest Chicago metropolitan area. The Rialto Square Theatre is known as the ‘Jewel of Joliet’, as it has been noted as one of the world’s 10 most beautiful theaters. The 1999 film Stir of Echoes had scenes shot at the Rialto Square Theatre. Two of the top employers are Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center and County of Will.

PRIME LOCATION

The city has a total area of 62.77 square miles that forms an irregular shape that reaches into nine different townships, more than any other city in the state. Joliet has a downtown located in the Des Plaines River valley, and the city has a “west side” and “east side” in reference to the river. Though the history of Joliet focuses on the Des Plaines River, Joliet actually reaches across both the Des Plaines River and the DuPage River, with other waterways in it like Hickory Creek, Spring Creek, the historic Illinois and Michigan Canal, Jackson Creek, and Aux Sable Creek. Chase Lake, Lake Juco, Michigan Beach, the Brandon Road Quarry, and Leisure Lake are some of the bodies of water in Joliet. The median household income in the city was $47,761 in 2010.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Some city landmarks are the Joliet Area Historical Museum, Route 66 Visitors Center, Chicagoland Speedway (NASCAR), and the Route 66 Raceway (NHRA). The Joliet Prison near downtown has been featured in television shows and movies, for example, in the TV show “Prison Break”. The very first Dairy Queen store to open was in Joliet, but it is now occupied by Universal Church. Chicagoland Speedway has annual events from NASCAR and the IRL that sometimes means the number of people in the city doubles due to the influx of fans.
