First Time Coming to Naperville, Illinois – Did You Know?
YESTERDAY
Joseph Naper arrived at the west bank of the DuPage River in 1831 with family and friends to create a settlement. In 1832, over a hundred settlers arrived at Naper’s Settlement, and the town became the DuPage county seat in 1839. The community was for a long time predominantly rural, but Naperville underwent a population explosion that started in the 1960s, increasing in the 1980s and 1990s due to the construction of the East-West Tollway and the North-South Tollway. The Chicago metropolitan area’s urban sprawl brought the area corporations, wealth, and jobs. Naperville was the locations of one of the worst train disasters in Chicago history in 1946.
TODAY
Naperville is a suburb of Chicago located in DuPage and Will counties, voted the second-best place to live in the country by Money magazine in 2006. Previously a quaint farming town, Naperville has turned into an affluent city that was called the wealthiest city in the Midwest in a 2010 study. Naperville is found within the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor, and much of its booming population is employed by Bell Labs and Western Electric, Amoco,Nalco, Nicor, and Edward Hospital. Tellabs has corporate headquarters in Naperville, and OfficeMax moved its corporate headquarters there in 2006. Triscuit products for North America are supplied by Kraft Foods that created a site there in 1968.
PRIME LOCATION
The 2010 census records the city’s total area at 39.32 square miles with 0.55 square miles of it water. Parts of Naperville drain to the West Branch of the DuPage River in DuPage County. In 1996, a flood caused downtown businesses in the City of Naperville to incur quite a bit of damage. Naperville borders Warrenville, Wheaton, Lisle, Bolingbrook, Woodridge, Plainfield, and Aurora. In 2010 there were 141,644 people, 52,270 households, and 36,289 families that lived in the city, and as of 2011, Naperville was the 176th most populous city in the country.
QUALITY OF LIFE
From 1999 to 2010, the Naperville Public Library had been ranked number one in the United States for its population size. There are three public library locations that are the Nichols Library in downtown, the Naper Boulevard Library, and the 95th Street Library. A local technology company was contracted to install fingerprint scanners in 2005 for convenient access to the libraries internet computers, but it provoked some controversy, so was not implemented. The Naperville Independent Film Festival is an annual film festival held there. The Naperville Historic District has 613 buildings, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
