The annual event called Oak Lawn Round-Up Days started in 1949 to help promote the Village, initially drawing 25,000 people. There were nearly 20,000 residents in Oak Lawn by 1960. One of the worst urban area tornados touched down in Oak Lawn in 1967, damaging or destroying around 900 buildings killing over 30 people.

It has over 300 acres of parks, recreational facilities and open land, that includes playgrounds, walking paths, baseball fields, volleyball and tennis courts, basketball, plus outdoor swimming pools, an indoor ice arena, two fitness centers, and an 18-hole golf course. The 18-hole Stony Creek Golf Course was designed by Carl Getz, opening in 1982, and it even features a miniature golf course. At the prompting of the city President, in 2007 Oak Lawn began hanging messages attached to the city stop signs to encourage drivers to obey the signs. Local residents were encouraged to submit their own ideas, and the signs can be found throughout the village.
