First Time Coming to Oak Park, Illinois – Did You Know?

Joseph Kettlestrings purchased 172 acres of land west of Chicago in 1837 that would later fall along the route of the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad. This spot would later become Oak Park. Upon incorporation, no alcohol was permitted to be sold within city limits, as the city has a history of alcohol prohibition. In 1973 restaurants and hotels were allowed to serve alcohol, and select grocery stores received governmental permission to sell packaged liquor in 2002. The city has a prime location as one of the closest suburbs to downtown Chicago, and its position between the Loyola Medical Center and the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Oak Park is a village to the west side of the city of Chicago in Cook County, and is the 29th largest municipality in Illinois by population. Public transportation from the Chicago ‘L’ Blue and Green lines, CTA buses, and Metra commuter rail give the village easy access to downtown Chicago. The population was 52,524 in 2000, yet dropped to 51,878 in 2010. Frank Lloyd Wright lived in Oak Park for the first 20 years of his career and he built many homes in the community in addition to his own. Wright designed many structures including the Unitarian-Universalist church called Unity Temple.

The entire village of Oak Park is located on the shore of ancient Lake Chicago that during the last Ice Age covered most of the city of Chicago. It was the forerunner to today’s Lake Michigan. Prehistoric Oak Park was a “Plains river Delta” system where the ancient Des Planes used to empty into glacial Lake Chicago. Oak Park also lies on one of North America’s four continental divides, marked by one plaque on Lake Street at Forest Avenue and a second in the northwest corner of Taylor Park. The Eisenhower Expressway is the primary highway between Chicago and Oak Park.

Adjacent to Chicago, 7 miles west of the “Loop”, the location created an active arts community in Oak Park. It has many theater, music, dance, and fine arts professionals, and it is home to several professional dance and theatre companies. Circle Theater, Oak Park Festival Theatre, and Momenta are a few examples. Oak Park Art League (OPAL) is a nonprofit community-based visual arts center that offers classes, workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and exhibitions. Other attractions include the Ernest Hemingway homes and museum, Edgar Rice Burroughs homes, Oak Park Conservatory, and Oak Park-River Forest Historical Society.
