First Time Coming to Waukegan, Illinois – Did You Know?
YESTERDAY
Waukegan is the hometown of comedian Jack Benny (1894–1974), one of the most enduring entertainers of the 20th century. There is a Waukegan middle school named for him, and he said was the greatest thrill he had ever experienced. There is also a statue of him standing in downtown facing the Genesee Theater, where the world premiere of his film Man about Town in 1939 was shown. They only house he stayed in that is still standing is at 518 Clayton Street, and it was designated a landmark by the city in 2006. Science-fiction writer Ray Bradbury was also born in Waukegan, and many of his stories clearly build on Waukegan.
TODAY
Waukegan is the county seat of Lake County, and it is the ninth-largest city in Illinois by population. On the western shore of Lake Michigan, it is the fifth-largest city after Chicago, Milwaukee, Green Bay, and Kenosha. Top employers are Lake County, Waukegan Community Unit School District 60, Cardinal Health, and Vista Health System. The city has plans for lakefront redevelopment, calling for much of the industrial activity to be removed and replaced by residential and recreational space, not including the Midwest Generation power plant and North Shore wastewater treatment facilities. The opening of the Genesee Theatre was step one in the revitalization project
PRIME LOCATION
Waukegan has three hazardous substances Superfund sites that are on the National Priorities List. PCBs were discovered in Waukegan Harbor sediments in 1975, and investigation showed that Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) was discharging hydraulic fluids containing PCBs through floor drains at the plant that went directly into Waukegan Harbor and ditches leading into Lake Michigan. The Johns Manville site one mile north of the OMC had asbestos contamination found in groundwater and air, and needs subsequent cleanup. The Yeoman Creek Landfill is a Superfund site found 1.5 miles west of the Johns Manville site. It was discovered in 1970 that the lack of a bottom liner in the landfill permitted leachate to enter the groundwater.
QUALITY OF LIFE
