First Time Coming to Wheaton, Illinois – Did You Know?


Wheaton was founded between 1831 and 1837, after the Indian Removal Act, and the Wheaton brothers arrived from Connecticut laying claim to 640 acres in the middle of town. Wheaton has seen rapid growth since 1950. Wheaton Center is a 758-unit apartment complex on 14 acres of downtown Wheaton. The six building complex is a landmark and has two twenty-story high-rise buildings that were built in 1975. Wheaton prohibited the sale of alcoholic beverages in 1887, and it lasted until 1985. Supermarkets, convenience stores, restaurants, and other establishments were all affected.


Wheaton is in Milton and Winfield Townships, and the county seat of DuPage County. It is an affluent city about 25 miles west of Chicago and Lake Michigan, with a 2010 population of 52,894. That year Money magazine listed Wheaton as one of the 25 highest earning towns in the country. Wheaton College is close to downtown Wheaton, and the campus features the Billy Graham Center, named for the famous alumnus. There is a museum dedicated to both the history of American evangelism and of Billy Graham’s international ministry, with exhibits conveying Christian ideas. Wheaton Franciscan Sisters founded Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital and Clinics in 1972, a nonprofit teaching hospital dedicated to the delivery of physical medicine and rehabilitation.


The city has a total area of 11.44 square miles. It is the sister city of Karlskoga, Sweden, with Karlskoga Street in downtown Wheaton named after the Swedish City. In 2000 there were 55,416 people, 19,377 households and 13,718 families living in Wheaton. A household’s average size was 2.64 and family size was 3.20. The 2005-2009 American Community Survey estimated the median household income at $85,257, with a median family income of $107,763. The city was listed among the “Top 25 Highest Earning Towns” on CNNMoney.com in 2010.


Wheaton is home to the DuPage County Fairgrounds, and the DuPage County Fair Association holds the DuPage County Fair annually in late July. The event has presented acts like Ashlee Simpson, Travis Tritt, Jesse McCartney, Jars of Clay, an Corbin Bleu. The Popcorn Shop on Front Street was formerly an alley between two buildings and may be one of the narrowest stores you can find. It has been around since the 1920s, and still has candy for as little as 2¢ a piece. The historic Grand Theater, built in 1925, enjoyed a grand reopening on May 11, 2002. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
